Creative Fundraising

Are you looking to fund your next big creative adventure but feel overwhelmed by the grant application process? Fear not! Today, we're diving into some savvy tips and strategies to help you craft a grant application that not only stands out but truly captures the essence of your vision.

Over the years I have assessed thousands of applications for Creative Scotland and other local funders, and I must have written hundreds in my career and thankfully have a high success rate! So these tips below are coming from my own experience and identifying the things that have been missed from unsuccessful applications.

1. Getting to Know Your Project Inside Out

First things first, let’s get crystal clear about what your project is all about. Think of this as setting the stage for a dazzling performance. Here’s what you need to pin down:

  • Aim: What is the overarching goal of your project? What’s the big dream? What are you hoping to achieve with your project?

  • Objectives/Outputs: What specific activities or outputs will help achieve this aim? or What steps will you take to make that dream a reality? What will you create along the way?

  • Outcomes: How will the world be different because of your project? What impact will it make?

  • Resources and Budget: What do you need to make it all happen, and how will the finances work out? Sketch out a budget that includes where the money’s going and where it’s coming from.

2. Organising Your Ideas with MindMaps

Ever feel like your brain is a browser with too many tabs open? Mind mapping can help! It’s a fantastic way to visualise your project and see how everything connects. It’s like drawing a map that leads to buried treasure, ensuring you don’t miss any hidden gems along the way.

3. Writing a Winning Narrative: The Heart of Your Application

Now, let’s weave that narrative—the story of your project that will capture the heart of the funder:

  • Kickoff: Start with a bang! Give a quick, enticing overview of your project.

  • The Plan: Get into the nitty-gritty. How will you bring your ideas to life? What makes your approach special or unique?

  • The Impact: Dream big—what will change as a result of your work? How does this align with what the funder cares about?

4. Making Sure You’re a Match: Aligning with the Funder’s Criteria

This part is like matchmaking—you want to make sure you and your funder are a perfect fit:

  • Do Your Homework: Really get to know the funder’s goals and what they’ve supported in the past.

  • Connect the Dots: Clearly show how your project meets their requirement and criteria.

5. The Finishing Touches: Writing and Reviewing

  • Keep It Clear and Simple: Write as if you’re explaining your project to a friend. Avoid jargon and keep things straightforward.

  • Mind the Budget: Make sure your budget makes sense and ties back to your project goals. Transparency is key!

  • Get a Second Opinion: Have someone else take a look at your application. They can spot things you might have missed and offer some gems of advice.

Wrapping It Up

Grant writing doesn't have to be a chore. With good planning and heart, you can turn your application into a compelling story that funders can’t wait to invest in. Remember, every application is a step forward in your creative journey—learn from each one and keep honing your craft.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are thousands of applications submitted every year, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it.
